BJJ competitors grappling in round robin format at Cork Open Spring 2025

Cork Open Spring 2025: Round Robin Success

12 May 2025

After a brilliant start to the year, the Cork Open returned on 11 May with a fresh approach. For the first time, we introduced a Round Robin format for select divisions, giving competitors more matches and a proper test of their skills throughout the day.

Round Robin Reception

The feedback was absolutely class. Athletes appreciated getting more mat time, and coaches valued the opportunity to see their students tested against multiple opponents. The format worked especially well for the Gi and No-Gi divisions at Mayfield Sports Complex, where the pacing kept spectators engaged all day.

Top Academy Battle Intensifies

Fair play to Studio Galera, who once again claimed top honours with 186 points and 17 gold medals, proving their February performance was no fluke. Their consistency across weight classes and belt levels was deadly.

Dragon Jiu Jitsu climbed to second place with 161 points, showing serious improvement with 11 golds and solid depth across their roster. AONTACH JJ secured third with 133 points, maintaining their position among the top academies.

With two competitions complete, these three teams had established themselves as the front-runners for the year-end cash prizes.

Series Leaderboard Heating Up

After two events, the overall standings show Studio Galera in the lead, followed closely by Dragon BJJ and Aontach. With €2,250 in cash prizes on the line at year's end (€1,000 for 1st, €750 for 2nd, €500 for 3rd), every match at the remaining two competitions will matter.
